Why Should You Own the Shirakawa-Go Print?

Shirakawa-Go is a site of small villages in the mountain part of Honshu island. It encompasses two villages, Shirakawa and Gokayama, which are under UNESCO protection for their unique building style. You can see what their houses look like in our Shirakawa-Go Print.

This part of Japan is one of the snowiest in the country, so people had to adapt their architecture to the environment. Because of that, their houses have thick and steep thatched roofs. They preserve the warmth inside the house and allow the snow to fall off quickly. The name for traditional Japanese houses is Minka, while this particular type has its own name, and it is gasshō-zukuri.
