The Old Course at St. Andrews is considered by some to be the “home of golf” because it is where golfing began in the 15th century. Our St Andrews Art Poster features the signature hole of this oldest golf course in the world, called the Road Hole. This Scottish course is open to the public, and it has a long and versatile history. When it was opened there were so many young men wanting to play golf (rather than practice their archery), that the then King James III banned the golf course and it had to close for some time.
After a while golf returned to this course, but new troubles arrived when rabbit farmers tried to obtain its territory. The battle between the rabbit farmers and those that wanted to keep the golf course rambled on for 20 years in the early 1800’s. Luckily, golfers managed to maintain it and continue its tradition. After that, the course evolved and influenced many modern golf courses.
